NORTH CAROLINA COUNCIL OF THE BLIND

HISTORY AND MEMBERSHIP

Origins of NCCB

In the fall of 1967, five North Carolina residents – Marie Boring, Theodore Bryant, Edison Craddock, Marvin Gatlin and Brady Jones – and three representatives from the American Council of the Blind – Durward McDaniel, Oral Miller and Floyd Qualls – met at the public library in Greensboro to establish a new organization for the blind and visually impaired citizens of North Carolina.  Chosen as officers at the initial meeting of the North Carolina Council of the Blind were Marvin Gatlin, president; Edison Craddock, vice president; and Marie Boring, secretary.  In subsequent years, Theodore Bryant and Brady Jones assumed major leadership roles in NCCB.

Membership in NCCB

Membership is open to all residents of North Carolina who are at least 16 years of age.  Neither blindness nor visual impairment are prerequisites for membership.  Members either affiliate with a chapter in the city or county in which they live or they affiliate directly with NCCB as members-at-large.
